The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) created the Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) credential in 2013. The RBT is based on the principles of shaping human behavior through the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). There was a need for qualified trained paraprofessional staff to assist with the implementation of care plans created by a Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA). RBTs do not create care plans for individuals, they work under the direct, on-going supervision of a BCBA. To qualify for an RBT credential a candidate must be at least 18 years of age and have at least a high school diploma or the equivalent. If those criteria are met, candidates must then take a 40-hour online, video-based training course with modules designed to prepare them to sit for an initial Competency Assessment. After, they must take the RBT examination offered by the BACB. After completing the 40-hour training program, the candidate receives a course completion certificate which is valid for one year. The 40-hour training program is offered independent of the BACB. After the 40-hour RBT training course, the RBT candidate is required to complete an initial Competency Assessment conducted by a BCBA. This procedure can take up to eight hours and is one of the major requirements for RBT certification. The competency assessment involves direct observation of skills acquired from the RBT training course and is based on tasks found on the RBT Task List. The assessment is complete when the candidate demonstrates proficiency in each task as determined by the BCBA. The competency assessment must have been completed no longer than 90 days prior to submitting a completed application to the BACB. Once the candidate has successfully completed the assessment the next step is to take the RBT Examination offered by the BACB. The RBT exam is administered by Pearson VUE, a national testing center. To take the exam, candidates must submit a complete application to the BACB, including all documentation necessary to demonstrate that you have met all the steps above. The examination consists of 75 multiple choice questions, and candidates have ninety minutes to complete it. Candidates must also have a criminal background check done. Successfully completing all the aforementioned steps qualifies the RBT candidate for the RBT credential.

With school slowly starting to reopen after being closed for almost a year due to the pandemic, the need for RBTs is even greater. During the past year, teachers and school staff made valiant efforts at instruction to continue to provide education to their students. Yet, on day one of schools reopening we will see the consequences of the following: the lack of social contact between students, the lack of structure in the classroom and the lack of routine in the process of education. Without preparation, this could be overwhelming. Some of the questions that must be answered are: - How will you get the classroom under instructional control in the time that remains in the current school year? - When those classroom doors open, will your staff have the tools to shape the desired behaviors that lead to successful instruction? - Does your in-service training for staff include the technology of effective teaching? - What forms of training will help your staff get life back to normal in the classroom? Fortunately, science has the answers to all these questions, especially as they relate to how to shape the desired behaviors of students. That is best done with the application of scientifically valid methods we bring you through the Registered Behavior Technician® training program. Teachers educated in ABA produce better outcomes for their learners. Through the 40-hour online RBT training course, your staff will learn a proven, science-based methodology for gaining instructional control and preventing problem behavior. We have worked with thousands of instructors and paraprofessionals since our founding and can answer any question you may have.
